Ka’Neisha, a member of the first-ever cohort of NEW Scholars, will graduate from Green Bay East High School in 2021. She is always ready with a big smile, has a great attitude, and gives everything her best shot.
While Ka’Neisha and her family have always been invested in her academic success, they’ve also learned a lot about self-advocacy and asking for help through the NEW Scholars program. Early in her high school career, “I had a hard time getting my homework done,” she shared. “My NEW Scholars coach talked to one of my teachers – whose class I wasn’t doing too well in – to ask if I could stay after school. I stayed after and worked with my teacher, and I ended up with better grades!”
This is a great example of how one small change can make an enormous positive difference, and, in Ka’Neisha’s case, it has a ripple effect. She will use what she’s learned in NEW Scholars to help her younger siblings be successful and confident in school, too. “I want to make my family proud,” Ka’Neisha explains. “I want to show a good example to my younger sister and be a role model.”
