MAKING A CHANGE

To enhance awareness and promote understanding, our college readiness program gets a new name.

TREVA IS MAKING THE MOST OF HER EDUCATION

THIS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT IS GRATEFUL TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HER CHOSEN CAREER – AND HERSELF

Treva accepts her scholarship at the Lamp of Knowledge Celebration

For scholarship recipient and Pulaski High School graduate Treva, freshman year at UW-Madison was unlike anything she’s experienced before. “Moving to a new city where I didn’t know anyone, facing academic challenges, and taking on the responsibilities of living independently showed me just how strong I am,” she explains.

After settling in on campus, she found new hobbies that sparked her interests and creativity. “I have written articles for the campus newspaper, and I get involved in volunteering with my sorority. I am also a member of the UW-Madison Pre-Law Society and the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) learning community,” Treva says.

Through WISE, she completed a service project for the Madison Lakeshore Nature Preserve, and enjoys spending time in the Allen Centennial Garden on campus.

Treva explores the Allen Centennial Garden on the UW-Madison campus.

Between her campus activities and coursework, Treva reflects on what she’s learned so far. “College unveils a mosaic of different cultures, ideas, and opinions, and you must be willing to learn from those around you,” she shares. “Open-mindedness means being willing to engage with different people and experience new things.”

Treva aims to pursue a career that allows her to contribute to equity in healthcare. “I believe that through a career in law, I can best help promote equity and justice and contribute to a healthcare system that serves all Americans,” she explains.

And while she studies hard at UW-Madison and someday soon in law school, Treva feels grateful for scholarships and the supportive donors who make them possible:

“Scholarships allow me to pursue my dream of a career in law. I am committed to making the most of this opportunity by excelling academically and contributing positively to my community. I am incredibly grateful for your investment in my future.”

INTRODUCING OUR NEWEST BOARD MEMBERS

HELP US WELCOME THESE OUTSTANDING PROFESSIONALS!

Vice President, Financial Advisor Eric Flick of Wealth Enhancement Group has been named Treasurer of the CollegeReady Board of Directors.

He is active in the community as a youth soccer coach and, through his work as a Financial Advisor, helps families with investment management and financial planning. Eric’s board participation begins after serving for four years on the CollegeReady Finance Committee. “I enjoy giving back to the community,” he says, “and look forward to being a bigger part of an organization that supports youth and promotes academic success through current and higher education.”

Flexagon’s Director of Customer Success Rebecca Pruess has joined CollegeReady’s Board of Directors.

After moving back to Green Bay, Rebecca got involved with The Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay. Since then, she has served on several boards, including the Neville Public Museum Foundation, Volunteer Center, YWCA, East High Fine Arts Institute and The Canary Fund. “The vision of CollegeReady, that every student has access to the tools necessary to pursue higher education, resonates loudly with me,” Rebecca explains. “Whether tech school, trade school, or four-year college, I truly believe that higher education does have the power to change the trajectory of a person’s life.”

Steve Rhode, General Manager of SFI Trucks & Financing at Schneider, has become a member of the CollegeReady Board of Directors.

Steve also serves on the board of the Shawano Soccer Club and the Navarino Nature Center, where he and his family volunteer their time at events and programs focused on providing nature and conservation education. “I look for ways to give back to the community that involve providing a helping hand versus just a handout,” Steve shares, “and I strongly believe that education is an important tool to help children grow into productive adults. I have been impressed with the mission of CollegeReady; it’s a perfect match.”

Jacob VanDaalwyk, Director of Enterprise Risk Management at Associated Bank, has joined CollegeReady’s Board of Directors.

Jacob’s service on the Northeast Wisconsin American Red Cross board, coaching youth sports, and volunteering with Junior Achievement led him to CollegeReady, where after participating in scholarship application evaluation he wanted to get more involved.
“I am a first-generation college graduate, and I want to give back in a way that can improve the lives of youth and families in my community,” Jacob says. “I love the mission of CollegeReady and it resonates with my personal experience.”

A NAME CHANGE FOR OUR AFTER-SCHOOL COLLEGE READINESS PROGRAM

To enhance the overall awareness of our organization and promote a greater understanding of the services we provide – scholarships and college readiness – we will no longer use the name ‘NEW Scholars’ for our after-school program that prepares students for college. We will now simply call it our college readiness program.

We think this change will help clear up some confusion:

  • First, NEW Scholars is not a separate organization, it is part of CollegeReady!
  • Second, the term ‘NEW’ is confusing.
    • The program is not new – it has been around for over ten years.
    • Our students are not new – many have attended for several years.
    • ‘NEW’ also refers to Northeast Wisconsin, but the program only serves Green Bay area students.

What else is changing? Nothing! While we are dropping the name NEW Scholars when describing our college readiness program, our students and families will continue to receive uninterrupted support from CollegeReady and our staff toward college and scholarship success.

We look forward to this change, and to continue helping local youth learn and grow, succeed in school, and prepare for college!
